We all want to protect our homes, primarily the people, pets, and irreplaceable possessions inside. Getting an alarm system is one of the first steps you can take to help protect those things most valuable to you, but there are also a few simple steps you can take to help prevent a break-in.
1. Lock your doors and windows.
This may seem like common sense, but often people forget to do it or feel comfortable enough in their neighborhood and leave their homes open. Burglars look for easy targets so take the time to make sure you are locked up.
2. Leave the lights or tv on when you leave.
Most times, an intruder wants to break into an empty house. If it looks like someone is home, they are more likely to avoid your residence.
3. Stop your mail.
If you are going to be away for a vacation, stop your mail and/or have a neighbor drop by to make sure flyers or packages aren’t building up on your front steps. This is a quick indicator that you are away.
4. Get a dog.
A dog can be your best friend and a burglar’s worst enemy. Burglars will often quickly turn the other way when they see a dog. A dog will also often alert you when you are home if they hear someone at the door or window.
5. Keep your landscaping clean and manageable.
Think about your landscaping. Burglars like to use large trees and big bushes to hide behind until they have an opportunity to make a move. It’s okay to have a bush out front but keep it smaller and properly trimmed to make it harder to use it is a hiding space.
There are so many other ways to protect your home and keep you safe, but these 5 are some the quickest ways to secure your property.
