The 2018 Flu season is shaping up to be one of the worst in recent history. While the number of hospitalizations are up across the country, so too are deaths. Especially among the most susceptible groups, the young and the elderly.

According to the CDC, there are some important steps we can take to lower your chances of getting the flu and in minimizing the effects if you do get the bug.

  • Get vaccinated. The CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against the flu virus. While the flu vaccine is not a guarantee against getting sick, it does lower your chances of getting sick and improves your odds for a quicker recovery if you do get sick.

The CDC recommends everyone get the vaccine, especially high risk persons such as young children, pregnant women, people with chronic health problems and those over the age of 65. The vaccine is easy to get at either a doctor’s office or certain drug stores. The vaccine is readily available, so supply is plentiful.

  • Preventive actions to stop the spread of germs. The CDC recommends avoiding contact with sick people and frequent hand washings to stop the spread of the disease. If you do become sick, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone.

  • Take flu antiviral drugs if your doctor prescribes them. These antiviral drugs are different from antibiotics and are prescribed by a doctor. They are not available over the counter.

These drugs can make illness milder and recovery quicker.

Even while following the recommended preventative measures, the flu can still strike and be deadly. If you or a loved one are over the age of 65, medical monitoring could be a great way to provide piece of mind this flu season; allowing for direct access to medical personal, at the touch of a button.
